Hyung-Tae Kim, in designing Christian, tried to give him a light and casual feeling to offset Joan's strong feminist characteristics. He also admits to making Christian more bishonen in part II than in part I.

The Inferno Incident
Christian was first recruited by the ISS after he uncovered and put an end to a plot to kill Empress Christina by his own brother. Instead, Christian killed his brother Albatini, and the Empress was saved. Joan Kartright, a Valkyrie at the time also showed superior skill and was recruited by the ISS at the same time.
Joan
While working together, Christian and Joan had their differences, and at times fought like cats and dogs, but in the end, they fell in love with one another. Soon after they were engaged to be wed, Saladin was ambushed, and Joan was the first to respond to the call. Teleporting onto the scene, she ended up in the line of fire, and was killed instantly. It was on this day that Christian swore his revenge on Saladin. Shortly hereafter, Ashurei took Christian under his wing, and Hydelloon was born.
